And What A Year It Has Been

Posted on May 14, 2013 by Karen Aitken

I can still vividly remember the butterflies and tension I felt as one year ago today I waited for the clock to strike 9am. This was finally it. It was time to unleash Pretty Serious upon the world. I remember thinking "What if no one buys anything? What if I'm a miserable failure and this past ten months of planning and production has been for nothing?", but as you can plainly see that wasn't the case. Pretty Serious was a shining light in my life from day one and has continued to grow brighter over the last twelve months.

Our original countdown clock

It's satisfying to realise that you, my wonderful customers, 'get' our products in every sense of the word. You don't just buy them. You enjoy them. You're a part of the whole. You get our energy, our quirks and our silly references. You help us make decisions and design colours. Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives. Thank you for letting us bring a little sparkle in to your day. You've certainly brought a lot of sparkle into ours and without you, we would be nothing.

The Hello World PR Flier

I would also like to thank our wonderful wholesalers who have helped Pretty Serious reach an audience that we had only dreamed about. Mei Mei's Signatures, Norway Nails, Llarowe, Makeup Express and Pshiiit Boutique, we love you guys too. Thank you for bringing Pretty Serious into your family and taking a chance on a girl with a dream.

Original versions of VT100 and Morning Java

Thank you to the incredibly talented Leigh Young, without your amazing vision and talent we wouldn't have Daphne to celebrate this birthday. You've given us class and style and an image that is all our own and I am so proud of what we have created together. I look forward to the spectacular imagery we will bring to life in the future. You are the best, and I mean that sincerely. There is no one better for us than you.

Daph comes to life. We should have kept the freckles!

One of the things we were adamant about right from day one was projecting a professional, polished look and for that I owe a great debt of gratitude to Wil Palijo, whose kick ass photography skills gave us beautifully sleek product shots that made sure we looked like we meant business from our very first day in business. Thank you so much for being a part of this, Wil and please inform your beautiful girlfriend that she will never pay for a Pretty Serious product in her life and she needs to stop trying to order them on launch day. ;)

The original six (and our original box!)

Australia and the USA are our biggest markets and while we were always able to meet the home grown demand, the USA proved more difficult, until the angel that is Alicia Hinds swooped in and became a part of our family. US orders are now shipped quickly, correctly and cost effectively out of MI meaning that sometimes, our US customers will get their orders before Australian customers! I am constantly in awe of Alicia's speed and efficiency and I can honestly say Lish that I could not do this without you. You've become an irreplaceable cog in the machine, an integral part of the Pretty Serious whole and I could not ask for a more wonderful person to work with us and I hope you stay with us as we grow.

Now that's a lotta polishes!

Finally, I'd like to thank my fiance Ben, who now knows more about nail polish than any man probably should. You've been by my side from the moment I uttered the phrase "I think I'd like my own polish line" encouraging me, supporting me, helping me. You name things, you design colours, you theme collections, you create artwork, you run social media, you pack boxes, you take photos, you run me to the post office, you kick my ass when I need it, you high five me when I've done well. Pretty Serious is every bit as much your baby as it is mine. You are incredible and together we will rule the world.

Thank you to everyone who has blogged, shared, bought, photographed  wrote about, liked, loved or supported Pretty Serious in the last twelve months. We have so much more to come, so here's to the year ahead.
